**Preemies: Little Fighters and Their Unique Journey**

Published on 02.09.2024
Do you remember our theme month in January? Back then, we discussed the topic of "Preemies" and shared a lot of valuable information and personal stories with you. It's important to us to continually raise awareness about this topic. Preemies, these little miracles, often come into the world much earlier than originally planned and face unique challenges from the very beginning. In this blog post, we want to revisit the topic, provide you with important information, valuable tips, and insights, and introduce you to the organization Frühchen Schweiz.

"Frühchen Schweiz" is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting premature and sick newborns in Switzerland. Together, we aim to raise awareness about the special needs of these little fighters and their families.

Important Facts About Premature Births in Switzerland

Premature births are more common in Switzerland than one might think. Here are some important facts:

- Preemies are the largest group of pediatric patients. Preemies often require intensive medical care and specialized attention to get through the critical first weeks and months.
- 53% of multiple pregnancies end in premature birth. Multiple births carry an increased risk of premature delivery, bringing additional challenges for the families.
- In Switzerland, a child is born prematurely almost every hour. This number highlights how many families are faced with the challenges of premature birth each year.
- There are 29 specialized neonatal units in Switzerland. These departments are specifically equipped to provide intensive care for preemies and sick newborns.

Tips for Families with Preemies

The situation can often be overwhelming for parents of preemies. Here are some valuable tips that can help you navigate this time:

1. Accept help: It’s okay to accept support from friends and family. Whether it’s having meals brought to you or organizing care for siblings – every bit of help is valuable.

2. Utilize hospital support services: Many hospitals in Switzerland offer support services such as social counseling, psychotherapy, pastoral care, and peer support. These services can be a great relief.

3. Limit contact: Inform your social circle that you may need reduced contact during this time. This can help reduce stress and create more calm for you and your baby.

4. Kangaroo care and reading: Physical contact through kangaroo care and reading to your baby can have healing effects and strengthen the bond.

5. Use the Frühchen Schweiz platform: The Frühchen Schweiz platform offers valuable information and support for affected families. Connecting with other parents in similar situations can be especially helpful.

6. Allow yourself to feel and practice self-care: It’s important to allow yourself to feel all your emotions and take care of your own health. Keeping a journal can help organize your thoughts.

7. Celebrate small milestones: The first weeks and months with a preemie are often marked by small but significant progress. Whether it’s the first smile or a bit of weight gain – every little achievement is a reason to celebrate.
